What Is Gamma Knife Surgery?
One of NWH's most popular procedures in addressing the spread and growth of aggressive tumors, gamma knife surgery is a highly effective method of treating inoperable cancer in the brain. Despite the implications of the name, the gamma knife is not actually a knife at all. Instead, it's a stereotactic radiosurgery device that can target tumors without an incision. With the ability to deliver up to 192 direct radiation beams that affect diseased areas without harming surrounding healthy tissue, gamma knife procedures can kill cancer cells in places traditional surgery cannot.
Unlike many cancer surgeries, gamma knife treatments are completely painless. The procedure takes place in one single session and does not require a hospital stay or even the use of anesthesia.
